A.I.R.E? It is not the Spanish word for “AIR” it is not an association as many think and they are of course wrong. It is the so called “Anagrafe Italiani Residenti all'Estero”

Thousands of Italian citizens are expats living abroad (outside Italy) in Spain, in UK, in France, in Germany, in Argentina, in Australia, in the USA etc.

Many of them even have dual citizenship (for example American and Italian citizenship).

Their frequent question is: “When do I have to register to A.I.R.E.?

Italian citizens resident outside Italy must register to A.I.R.E.:

when they move for more than 12 months (1 year)

if they live abroad because they were born abroad (outside Italy) or because they have obtained Italian citizenship recognition

Italian minors also must be registered to A.I.R.E. And those with dualcitizenship (Italian citizenship and citizenship of another Country).

Sometimes Italian citizens (or with dualcitizenship) move to a Country for instance to Germany, they establish their life in Frankfurt but after some time there, they decide to move to Berlin.

Their question in those cases is: “ Do I have to inform A.I.R.E. I've moved to another town in the same Country? Do I have to inform them that I've moved even if it is the same Country I am already registered?

You must maintain updated your details (about your residence, marital status etc.) so you must inform your Consulate about any change

If you are living abroad you must register to A.I.R.E. To renew your Italian passport and also to renew your children passports at your local Italian Consulate.
