Registration in Italy of the marriage celebrated abroad between same-sex citizens

The Italian Supreme Court of Cassation has given its opinion regarding the registration of foreign marriages between same-sex couples (marriages celebrated abroad) with ruling 11696/2018, we refer of course to those marriages where one citizen is Italian (Italian nationality- Italian citizenship) and the other one is a foreign citizen or both are of Italian nationality.

The above ruling of the Italian Supreme Court of Cassation (Rome, Italy) has established that a marriage between same-sex couples must be recognized and registered in Italy as a “Civil Union” (in Italian we call it "Unione Civile") and cannot be registered as a marriage.
